This video is from a carpet repair in Palm Beach Gardens, Fl. This job comes from a client the has their carpets cleaned every few months. They do this because they realize the importance of preserving their investment and to give a clean and healthy appearance to their clients when they visit. By calling me early enough to fix the damaged caused at the seam of their carpeting, I was able to save them thousands of dollars by not having to replace their carpet. Also, by not cutting the piece that was pulled and leaving a void in the carpet making it look bad, I was able to save the appearance as well as their money. Any questions feel free to call me at the office. 561-277-8211

Now a days more and more people are becoming concerned with the stuff they eat, the products they use and most importantly the stuff they bring into their homes. So you are not alone in asking this question.

This question in particular has brought up quite a bit of talk in the carpet cleaning industry. Although, some chemicals are made a bit stronger for some of the heavier soiled carpeting; most of, and usually all of it is extracted out of the carpet and your home. Thus leaving your carpets clean and not full of chemicals. This is also considering the company you have hired has technicians that are trained and certified (an uninformed and uneducated tech can ruin your carpet ).

What can be even more harmful to you and your family is what is in the carpet before it is cleaned. A build up of soil can be a breading ground for bacteria, fungus and other micro-organisms. Tracked in decaying matter, pest control chemicals, spilled food that spoils (and many more). I believe that the idea of using chemicals to clean a carpet is far superior to the alternative, not having your carpets cleaned. These things may cause more harm than the limited exposure you would have using us and our products.

I need to give credit to Scott Warrington of http://www.interlinksupply.com/ for some of this information.

Remember the popular Wisk laundry detergent commercials from the 70’s… Ring around the collar? “Those ugly stains. You’ve tried soaking them out and scrubbing them out, but you still end up with… ring around the collar.”

There is a phenomenon in the carpet cleaning industry that could easily be called, “ring around the room,” but is more commonly referred to as filtration soiling or soil filtration lines.

What are soil filtration lines? Soil filtration lines are ugly dark lines – usually from 1 to 3 inches in width - that often show up in homes along the baseboards, under doors, along stairways, around furnace vents and under floor length draperies.

The Cause

Filtration soiling is caused by smog, soot, dust, carbon monoxide and other microscopic airborne pollutants that pass through the carpet pile. As the pollutants pass through the carpet, the fibers act as a filter to remove the fine particles of airborne soil. The pollutants build up in the carpet and slowly turn from light gray to black. Homes and businesses in the vicinity of large cities, industrial areas or near busy roads and highways are more prone to filtration soiling, because of increased levels of air pollution, although no building is immune.

The pollution enters the home via foot traffic, through open doors and windows, from “fresh air” intakes on heating and cooling systems, or from the crawl space.

Airborne pollutants are distributed throughout a building via the heating or air conditioning system or through natural convection currents in the building structure. In virtually every home and building, gaps are found at the lower edge of walls, between steps and the walls of a staircase and between the floor and the drywall. Soil filtration lines may take weeks, months or even years to appear.

Ironically, newer, more energy efficient homes are more likely to have soil filtration lines than older homes, because the exterior walls are usually more air-tight, forcing more air movement through gaps in the interior walls. The popularity of lighter colored carpets in newer homes has drawn attention to the problem, since light colors show soil more readily.

Olefin and polyester carpet fibers show the greatest affinity to filtration soiling. This is due to the oily nature of the pollutants and the oil-loving characteristics displayed by these fibers. This chemical attraction can cause a reaction whereby the oily deposits become a part of the carpet fiber, making them very hard to remove. Nylon fibers are somewhat easier to clean because they do not have as strong a chemical infinity to filtration lines.

Prevention

It is very difficult to completely prevent soil filtration lines. Sealing cracks along a wall with caulking or expanding aerosol foam insulation will help, but may force it to occur somewhere else. The best method of prevention is to develop a habit of vacuuming along baseboards and stairways weekly, using a crevice tool. Every couple of months, spray along these areas with a residue-free carpet spotter and wipe with a white towel. Also, during the months of heaviest usage for your heating or air conditioning system, change the filters at least monthly. Clean filters pull more airborne pollutants from the air, cutting down on the amount of pollution that can be passed through the carpeting.

Removal

Treatment with a carpet spotter in the early stages is quick, easy and extremely effective. Do not use any carpet spotters that contain soaps, as rapid re-soiling will occur with lines that quickly show up darker than before. The longer the problem goes untreated, the more difficult it is to correct. Once the lines become charcoal or black in color, an improvement is about all one can hope for. Due to the oily nature of filtration soil, once the problem has reached this stage, a solvent-based spotting product is required. Unfortunately, any solvent product strong enough to dissolve and remove heavy filtration soiling would also be strong enough to dissolve the latex glue holding the fibers in the carpet backing. The disastrous result of such aggressive treatment could be a hand full of carpet fibers and a bald spot on your carpet. Kind of like curing the disease, but killing the patient in the process.

Ring around the room, those ugly stains! You’ve tried scrubbing, but you still end up with….

As always, if you have any questions about this subject, please feel free to call our office!

Did you know that carpeting is a textile, just like upholstery, linens and clothing? When people pay $50 for a pair of jeans, they do not get upset when the knees eventually become faded and worn. Some of the same people seem to think that their carpet should last a lifetime.
Wear is caused by a combination of several things, including soil in the carpet, traffic lanes, loss of fibers, infrequent vacuuming and time.
The main reason carpet shows signs of premature wear is because it is not maintained properly. When major traffic lanes are vacuumed daily and spots or spills are promptly removed, carpeting will look better and last longer.
Traffic Lane Gray
Like all textiles, carpets will eventually show signs of wear. The wear patterns will first show up in the heaviest traffic areas. The wear creates an illusion of soiling, which often causes frustration and misunderstanding between homeowners and carpet care experts. Even though a carpet has been cleaned, it does not mean worn traffic areas will look clean. This situation creates what is know as traffic lane gray, a condition that has been nicknamed “ugly out.”
There is not a lot a carpet care expert can do about “ugly out.” When a 10 year old carpet is cleaned, you will end up with a clean 10 year old carpet. It may not appear to be as clean as you had hoped. Just like when you throw your old pair of jeans in the wash, the worn areas will still be evident.
Matting
There is a point when carpet fibers will no longer return to their original shape. As fibers lose their twist, the carpet begins to look flat, bunched together and distorted. This is called matting. Matting will cause the carpet to look dirty and gray even when the carpet is clean and all soil has been removed.
Regular Maintenance
The best way to keep your carpet looking it’s best is to properly maintain it. Vacuum thoroughly as often as humanly possible. Vacuuming removes loose soil before it becomes embedded in the fibers. Use proper spotting methods. Do not use any product on your carpets unless it is advised by our staff. Use of the wrong cleaner can permanently “set” a stain that might have been easily removed with the proper product. Have your carpet cleaned by us at least once a year, more often if you have heavy traffic. The removal of soils and stains will refresh its appearance while ridding the fibers of abrasive materials.
Remember, with proper maintenance, you can prevent “ugly out!”

Test in an inconspicuous area for colorfastness.

Use small amounts of the product and work your way from the outside in.

Blot up the unwanted spot and spot remover. NEVER scrub the spot, this might set the stain into the fiber causing it to be difficult or impossible to remove.

After you have removed the spot rinse the area with cold water.

If you do not have a spotter handy, view this page to make one from stuff you might have around this house.View Here

What if the spots keep coming back?

Apply carpet spot remover and place several layers of paper towel or an old cotton towel over the spot. Place at least 10 pounds of weight on the area. Remove the towel the next day. Fluff the carpet and allow it to dry. If spot the returns, repeat the process.

This is a great question. Here is why. Not all cleaners even move furniture for you to ask this question. Especially with the way times are, a lot of people are trying to cut corners and pinch pennies every where they can. Well our carpet cleaners, at 561 Carpet and Tile, will never short you on the thoroughness of the cleaning.

As for the dents in your carpeting… the pliable nature of carpet allows for quite some give and flexibility. This is not always a good thing, especially in the case of large dressers or maybe a hutch. The weight from these pieces can, in some cases, permanently damage the backing of carpet. It also, can affect the resiliency of the tuft. Large amounts of weight plus long periods of time equal damaged carpet.

On the up side, there is a way to help lessen this. Moving your furniture, even a few inches, from time to time can help drastically. Slide it to the side, pull it close to the wall, or maybe push it away from the wall. What ever direction you are moving it be sure to give the carpet time to recover before you move it back. Also remember, moving it back to the same spot may cause it to wear faster because the backing of the carpet may already have been damaged.

If you are stuck with this problem and need it to be solved. Please feel free to call us, as we can repair damages just like that.
